Getting to know Gerald Strickland

My name is Gerald Strickland, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master's in Social Work from Wayne State University. I provide client-centered, compassionate care using evidence-based treatment approaches to help people. I utilize cognitive behavioral techniques to reduce maladaptive behaviors and thinking patterns while enhancing adaptive functioning. My approach to therapy begins with building trust and rapport with the patient. I use motivational interviewing techniques to learn from the patient what they would like to work on. Together, we identify problems and create a treatment plan to address maladaptive behaviors. Using a client-centered approach, I carefully identify distortions in thought and teach patients how to challenge these distortions, fostering better self-esteem based on self-honesty and introspection. I have spent most of my career working with anxious and depressed individuals and have experience with psychotic patients in inpatient settings. I also work with patients who have post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, and personality disorders. My experience spans various settings, including clinics, jails, prisons, hospitals, and, for the past three years, remote work via Zoom. People often tell me I have a pleasant and calming voice. I modulate my tone depending on the topic and remain mindful of my body language. I strive to create a safe and comfortable environment for patients and am cautious when engaging in confrontation. I pay close attention to timing and patient readiness for change, assessing resilience, frustration tolerance, and motivation. I tune in to the patient's pace and constantly check in to ensure the interventions resonate with them. I was drawn to psychotherapy and social work as a young person because of my passion for helping others.
