Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there! I'm Heather Burdick, a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist specializing in teens and young adults. I've been in mental health for two decades, mostly providing group and individual therapy to middle and high school students on their campuses, along with parenting support to families. I earned my Bachelor's from the University of California San Diego and completed my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy and Child Counseling at the University of San Diego. My approach is client-centered, applying aspects of Solution-Focused and Narrative Therapies, while borrowing elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy where applicable. I don't believe therapy is one-size-fits-all—treatment should be dynamic and responsive to clients' needs. Solid client-therapist rapport is foundational, built on mutual respect and collaboration in a positive, non-judgmental space. I have extensive experience with stress and anxiety, depression, grief processing, anger management, substance abuse and recovery, self-harming behaviors, life transitions, and interpersonal struggles or challenging social relationships. I have a big personality and embrace a straightforward, direct communication style, favoring humor, empathy, and strengths-based language as healing tools. While therapy is not easy, it should be beneficial and gratifying—and maybe even something clients look forward to, given the relief it can provide after struggling. Interestingly, I didn't set out to become a therapist. I started college at UC San Diego wanting to be a pediatrician; after a year, psychology appealed to me more. I switched majors, aiming to support youth mental health through counseling rather than medicine, which led me to pursue graduate studies locally at the University of San Diego.
