Psychotherapist
NC
Hi there! My name is Heather Griffin, and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina. I earned my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. For the past 17 years, I have been working with people who have felt trapped by their trauma histories and struggled with mental health concerns that have left them feeling hopeless. If you are ready to rewrite your story, I am excited to meet you and help you take that step. My approach My theoretical orientation is based on a contemporary model of narrative therapy. Within narrative therapy, the problem a client faces is external to the person; the person is not the problem. Narrative therapy is a constructionist therapy that places stories at the cornerstone of our lives. We live and feel our lives based on the stories we tell about ourselves, our families, and others. These stories provide meaning for us. As a narrative therapist, I believe our stories change slightly or even significantly each time we tell them. Additionally, the power of stories lies in our ability to share them with others. In this sense, narrative therapy is relational—the therapist and client are co-constructors of a “new story” that becomes empowering and liberating for the client. Although I view the world from a narrative perspective, I also incorporate tenets from other theories woven into the tapestry of narrative therapy. Specifically, I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to examine how cognitions or thoughts influence people’s feelings and behaviors. These underlying beliefs come to life within clients’ stories, and once brought into awareness, disputing can take place. Life scripts are also evident within the stories people tell.
