Getting to know Kevin Farrell

My name is Kevin Farrell, and I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in California for 19 years. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from California State University, Long Beach. Over my career as a therapist, I have worked with a variety of clients across the lifespan. The areas I have focused on are addictions, LGBTQ+, identity, attachment, and end-of-life issues. My primary goal is to build trust and a strong alliance with a client in order to assist them in the process of change. My approach I consider myself to be a psychodynamic psychotherapist, meaning that I often look beneath the surface of what the client feels, says, or does. However, I integrate the tools of other therapeutic approaches in my work with clients. These include primarily Existential therapy but also CBT, Self Psychology, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Feminist therapy. These approaches provide various tools depending on a client's needs. Clients come to therapy seeking change, and I see myself as a catalyst in that process. My focus I am most interested in clients I would describe as "searchers," although they may not characterize themselves that way. I believe that the struggle to find meaning in life can be triggered by challenging or painful life events such as addiction, a breakup, retirement, or turning a "big" age like 30 or 50. The search for identity or meaning is often an unspoken reason for reaching out to a therapist. I am comfortable working with a wide range of personal challenges including depression, anxiety, coming out, grief, health challenges, or when a client is facing death. Often, underneath these life events, a client discovers that they are searching for meaning in life or are seeking to gain a clearer picture of their own identity. My communication style While I maintain strong boundaries with clients, I think it is important that clients know that I live in the same world they do. I am also affected by life events.
