Getting to know Marisa Pappas

Hello, I'm Marisa. I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s in Social Work from San Diego State University, ready to help you heal, accept, prosper, and lay down any burdens that have kept you feeling stuck. I provide a space for authenticity, vulnerability, and alliance, as we have all experienced times of feeling misunderstood, lost, and alone. As a social worker, I take a whole-person approach and use a biopsychosocial method to better explore, understand, and personalize what you need in our sessions. I utilize trauma-informed approaches and evidence-based practices while implementing behavioral techniques to help you master skills, edit unhelpful narratives, and feel empowered to navigate life’s inevitable stressors. I use a mind/body approach so that we can uncover root causes and create healthy lifestyle habits to achieve the sustainable equilibrium and wellbeing you are searching for. Whether you are dealing with unprocessed loss and trauma, debilitating anxiety, mood or emotional disturbances, interpersonal challenges, or self-doubt, I’m here to collaborate with you to find peace and purpose. I specialize in trauma, grief and loss, self-esteem, and helping you increase psychological flexibility and change behaviors that are holding you back. I have predominantly worked with transitional-aged youth, older adults, and Veterans facing a wide spectrum of difficulties and hardships. I’m here to hear your story, support your goals, and help you uncover the barriers that stand in your way. In our sessions, I will integrate mindfulness, psychoeducation, skill-building, curiosity, and compassion. Let’s work together so I can show you your natural healing capabilities and assist you in creating a meaningful and values-based life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our first few sessions will be used to gather helpful information, create goals, and cultivate safety in our therapeutic relationship. Along your path, I will provide you psychoeducation, space to process emotions, and opportunities to learn new skills. We work collaboratively in sessions, and you will be challenged and respected along the way. I want you to leave therapy feeling more empowered and fulfilled than when you entered.

In-network insurances

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.

We’ve been together for several sessions now and I’m very impressed with her delivery, her knowledge and her authenticity.
It is a blessing to be able to talk to Marisa and refreshing when she provides feedback about what I was saying.
Marisa is engaging and a wonderful listener, non-judgmental. She works with my schedule and is so flexible.
Marisa is attentive and brings empathy and practicality to healing.
Marisa was calm, knowledgeable and helpful. I felt listened to and she had a lot of great constructive suggestions. We came up with a list of things that I can do to help myself feel better. I’ve had a lot of therapy because I have had depression for 30 years. I feel good about working with her and I feel hopeful which I haven’t felt for a long time.

Marisa has a deep knowledge of brain science and evolutionary psychology, a.k.a. how to live happily with a brain trapped in survival mode. Her approach is research-based and is effective in halting negative feedback loops and sparking positive spirals. At the core of her knowledge is warmth and humanism - not a gaudy performance, but something subtle that you don't notice until you feel its effects. I am more cerebral and analytical, and I appreciate working with her because I need to understand how and why therapeutic approaches work in order to practice them. It's like therapy is car maintenance, except you are the only mechanic that can work on your car, so you need an expert in cars there to explain the ins and outs of the engine, diagnose issues, and provide guidance in a way that you can continue practicing. Marisa clearly explains in layman's terms what's happening in your brain and why she's recommending certain approaches, and when you come back next session with success or issues, she is there to continue the work and provide support. Thank you Marisa!
