Dr. Mark Worthen, PsyD

Psychotherapist
NC
Hi there, I'm Mark! Hello - My name is Dr. Mark Worthen, a North Carolina licensed healthcare provider psychologist, with 30 years of postdoctoral experience. I start by giving you time to talk while listening carefully and reflecting back what I hear until you tell me that I've got it—that I understand your suffering, your values, and what you want to change. My approach I tailor a psychotherapeutic approach to your personality, problems, and goals. I will not know immediately what approach that will be: It is something we discover together. Your preferences, values, and beliefs matter. I have education and training in modern psychoanalytic theories like British object relations and self-psychology, which have striking similarities to contemporary approaches like "parts work" (internal family systems therapy). Insight into your unconscious fears, conflicts, and motivations may liberate you from making different decisions than your unconscious mind has dictated for years. But insight-oriented psychotherapy runs the risk of stale enlightenment if it does not ignite behavioral change. For many people, more practical, here-and-now approaches work best, either alone or in combination with insight-oriented therapy. Examples of more practical approaches include behavioral activation, acceptance and commitment therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. While psychotherapy helps a lot, you should not rely on it exclusively. Religion and spirituality play a crucial role for many people. Faith is powerful. As are your family's and friends' encouragement, wisdom, and fierce love. Therapy works best when combined with other sources of inspiration and hope. My focus Areas of specialization: Adult ADHD, Cannabis Use Disorder, Drinking Moderation (only after a careful assessment), male survivors of sexual abuse or assault, mood disorders (depressive and bipolar), and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (but only if you have, or are willing to see, a psychiatrist also).
