Getting to know Marlyn Tavira

My name is Marlyn (Marleen) Tavira. I am a first-generation college student and a licensed clinical social worker with a Master's in Social Work from the University of Southern California. I hold certifications in oncology as well as hospice and palliative care. With ten years of experience in medical settings, I have worked closely with patients and their families. Life can be difficult at times, and you don't always know how to navigate a new medical diagnosis, work/life stressors, or other life-changing events. That's why I am here to walk this journey with you, whatever it may look like. My approach is client-centered, meeting clients where they are at any given moment. I draw from evidence-based modalities such as Family Systems Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Crisis Intervention Model, and Task-Centered Practice. I work with clients adjusting to life-changing events like a new medical diagnosis-cancer, infertility, a new baby-or challenging situations and work/life stressors. My clinical focus includes grief and loss; psycho-oncology; chronic disease and medical crisis; fertility treatment; older adults and aging; psychoeducation; crisis; anxiety; depression; trauma; and domestic violence. In therapy, clients have the opportunity to express their true feelings in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Therapy is guided by what the client wants to discuss and their comfort level in sharing. As we build rapport, I collaborate with clients to formulate attainable goals and address issues important to them. I am hopeful we can work together as a team to tackle and overcome identified challenges. I have been passionate about mental health for the past 10 years, dedicated to helping clients find their own voice, develop skills, and overcome the obstacles holding them back.
