Getting to know Mary Nambu

Hi there, I'm Marylee (Mary)! I believe that a good therapeutic alliance is a key to success in psychotherapy. I begin psychotherapeutic work by collaboratively building a relational safe space with my clients. While I am trained, credentialed, and have a skill set that collaborates to inform client progress, I believe clients are the agents of their change and are the true "experts" on their own journey to a joyous and thriving life. My MA is in psychology, and I have a BS in Multiple Subject Area Teaching and a BS in Music Education. My approach My primary approach to psychotherapy is from the psychodynamic lens, specifically Self Psychology. I am also eclectic and draw from many modalities as necessitated by individual client needs. My focus My ideal client is curious and inquiring. My communication style My communication style is one of empathic inquiry and collaborative thoughtfulness about both the content and the process, which underlies the content. I rarely use a directive tone or give direction, and I usually collaboratively explore and inquire in a manner that moves clients to independent insight or decision-making. My journey to therapy I was compelled to become a therapist through my own growth and healing from childhood trauma and subsequent alcohol addiction. Throughout my process, I utilized several recovery modalities, including psychotherapy, seasons of group therapy, psychoanalysis, and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. I am also a deeply spiritual person. While the lens of my spirituality is through the Catholic Christian faith, I deeply regard the wisdom of all faith traditions. I am joyfully and thankfully 35 years sober. I have a thriving marriage of 29 years and 3 successful young adult children.
