Getting to know Milov Sonnier

I am Milov Sonnier, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Virginia. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Norfolk State University. My approach to therapy is integrative. I blend elements from different approaches and tailor those approaches to the client's needs. My approach The most common theoretical approaches that I use include humanistic approaches such as Gestalt and an existential focus. I believe that clients have the capacity to make rational choices. I enjoy guiding clients on their journey to find meaning in their experience while focusing on the here and now. For clients who are struggling with problematic behaviors, I find that a psychodynamic approach can help explore unconscious meaning and motivations. My focus I typically work with clients aged 18 and older who have a history of trauma, anxiety, depression, and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). My communication style The tone and environment I create for clients is one where they can truly be heard. I am not judgmental and do not want clients to feel judged or misunderstood. During sessions, I frequently check in with clients and ask questions such as, “What are your thoughts? How do you feel?” I use active listening skills and reflect back what I believe I have heard. I also ask, “What was your experience during this session? Were there any areas we did not cover that you would like to address in your next session?” I want clients to feel in control of their treatment and that each session is purposeful. My journey to therapy I have a passion for assisting people who have experienced traumatic events in their lives. Decades ago, a mentor encouraged me to become a social worker. At the time, I thought social workers mainly worked at the Department of Children and Family Services, assisting people with social and financial needs.
