Getting to know Nisha Elliot

My name is Nisha Elliott, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I earned both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Psychology from Virginia State University. My usual approach to treatment is Solution-Focused; however, based on the assessment of the individual or couple, the treatment modality may change. My focus is working with couples or individuals who are dealing with issues that impact their day-to-day life. My approach The most common theoretical approaches I use in my work are Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I also incorporate skills from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and techniques such as Genograms, Ecomaps, and Timelines. My focus I work with couples who are preparing for marriage as well as married couples facing challenges that threaten their relationship. I also work with individuals struggling with self-esteem and self-worth issues, anxiety, mild to moderate depression, relationship difficulties, anger, and stressors negatively affecting their lives. My communication style I provide therapy from a client-centered approach, partnering with clients to address what has brought them to therapy. Since my primary modality is Solution-Focused, the ultimate goal is to foster hope and build resilience, empowering clients to work toward the changes they envision in their lives. My journey to mental healthcare My journey to becoming a therapist began when I volunteered at a daycare in high school, noticing children who needed additional behavioral support and wanting to do more. This experience led me to pursue my degrees in Psychology at Virginia State University. I have worked in Public Behavioral Health for 22 years, witnessing both the severe and mild to moderate needs for mental health services. What drives me is working with individuals in the earlier stages of mental health struggles, hoping to prevent more severe symptoms from developing.
