Getting to know Richard De La Garza

As an undergraduate student at San Jose State University (SJSU), I had the opportunity to conduct doctoral-level research closely guided by faculty mentorship. His guidance integrated my sense of identity, culture, and history. My faculty advisor was an African American professor who teaches history featuring people of color. This unique research project was part of the Ronald McNair Scholar Fellow Program. Together, our research focused on Cesar Chavez, a civil rights leader. His life story attracted me largely because he shares a common culture and language as a Mexican-American. Most significantly, learning from my teacher about someone important in society was transformative. Chavez's life story was a turning point. At this point in my life, I was preparing to start graduate school. Thankfully, Chavez ignited a sense of direction toward social change. In hindsight, the struggles farmworker families and immigrants faced mirrored the realities of my own community's issues of poverty and crime. Above all, Chavez inspired me to think differently about how powerful systems in society exploit the most vulnerable people day to day. Building on this foundation, I earned my Master's in Social Work from Columbia University, further equipping me to address social injustices and advocate for marginalized communities.
