Getting to know Sonia Guilfoos

My name is Sonia Guilfoos, and I’m a licensed psychotherapist with a license in clinical/mental health social work. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from California State University, San Bernardino, and my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix. I am Latina and a first-generation Mexican-American. I specialize in brainspotting, cognitive behavioral therapy, and intergenerational trauma, using various approaches to help my patients meet their goals. I am well versed in 12-step recovery work, shadow work, and inner child healing. My approach I am eclectic in therapy, using interventions that best fit my patients. I often use cognitive behavioral therapy and focus on empowering my patients. Brainspotting has proven very effective for healing trauma faster than regular talk therapy. My focus I am comfortable treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief, intergenerational trauma, low self-worth, and addictions. I currently prefer working with adults, not couples. My communication style I am warm and nurturing, creating a safe environment where patients feel comfortable being themselves. I balance professionalism with authenticity, sometimes being open, real, laughing, and transparent in sessions. My journey to mental healthcare In 2004, I worked in a domestic violence shelter as a bilingual housing advocate, where I learned to interview and assess and became passionate about helping people heal. As a survivor who has experienced much healing and continues the work, I am driven by the freedom and healing I see my patients gain in therapy. My goals for you I ask my patients what they want from therapy and ensure our treatment goals help decrease symptoms causing impairment. My first session with you In our first session, I expect a big smile and lots of questions as we discuss what brought you to therapy.
