Susan Alonso, LCSW

Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Susan! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in California, License 65208. I returned to school later in life, earning my Master’s in Social Work from California State University, East Bay, after completing my Bachelor’s at Saint Mary’s College of California. This means I bring a great deal of life knowledge and experience. My approach I believe attachment is one of the most primal bonds we have. Reaching people through understanding their attachment style has worked well for my clients. The attachment between counselor and client is precious and delicate—it must be preserved. Attachment forms in childhood; there are attachment styles and injuries that can be healed with time and therapy. Childhood traumas can cause attachment injuries that carry into adulthood. Working with these injuries can lead to better adult relationships. My focus I work with grief, trauma, anxiety, childhood abuse, and other issues. I have extensive experience within the foster system. I believe all therapy is, at some level, grief therapy. At my core, I am a grief therapist, and I believe grief is involved in all counseling. My communication style The relationship is first and foremost in therapy. I work on our relationship first to ensure we are a good fit. I tend to be direct in my speaking, which comes from years of life experience. I will guide and help you on your journey. I also have a wicked sense of humor, which I use during sessions when appropriate. My journey to mental healthcare I worked with grief long before becoming a therapist. I went back to school in my 50s after gaining life skills and knowledge. From there, it took off. I also volunteer to facilitate grief groups in my spare time. This work makes me feel good inside, and I love that feeling.
