Susan Clarke, LMFT

Psychotherapist
23121 Plaza Pointe Dr, Ste 108, Laguna Hills, CA
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with 28 years of experience and hold a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. I feel honored to be part of someone's transformational journey. My focus is helping people heal the emotional pain they may carry and teaching them how to rebuild and/or repair their relationships with others and, most importantly, with themselves. "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." - C.G. Jung. The process of therapy, as I see it, is doing exactly that: becoming aware of the adaptive survival skills we learned that have become maladaptive in our lives. When our patterns clash or we begin to struggle with how we feel about ourselves, it creates a certain degree of pain, and being willing to ask for help is a sign of great courage. Counseling addresses the struggles, triggers, and feelings associated with emotional pain. My counseling approach includes supportive therapy, object relations therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy, and I also offer sand tray therapy. I work with individuals and couples.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a wife, mother and grandmother I feel I can bring experience above my training. It increases my capacity to understand the challenges in relationships and I am able to offer numerous healthy coping skills to the interventions provided in therapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I believe the most important component of therapy is the relationship we have. Building a trust and an unconditional personal regard is crucial for therapy to be successful. Much of the first few sessions is getting a thorough history, goals that you have for therapy and an understanding of your internal world. I believe it is not my agenda but what you present in the session that is crucial.
