Getting to know Tanya Lurie

Hi there, I'm Tanya! Hello, I am Desiree Lurie, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Colorado with over 25 years of experience serving diverse communities. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. I currently work with clients through Telehealth. I am passionate about normalizing mental health treatment and increasing access for all. Unfortunately, myths and stigma prevent many from getting the help they need. My clients commonly deal with anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, and trauma. My approach I listen with a non-judgmental ear to understand what is going on for my clients. I use a client-centered approach with strength-based techniques to tailor treatment to each individual. I encourage clients to try new approaches, behaviors, and responses to gain more control over their lives. I also utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and mindfulness. I have a strong interest in Somatic Therapy due to the mind-body connection. My focus I work with individuals age 12 and up, as well as couples and families, to address anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma history, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, and life transitions. My communication style I strive to create an authentic, relaxed environment, using humor at times to help clients feel comfortable and accepted. My journey to mental healthcare I was drawn to social work inspired by a family friend who shared her work in disadvantaged and disabled communities. Social workers have an ethical commitment to empowering people to improve their circumstances using their own and community skills and resources, along with a core belief in people’s ability to change. This is true in my work as a therapist: emphasizing people’s strengths and inner resourcefulness to control their lives and responses.

Desiree is compassionate and caring but she’s also practical about everyday life. She doesn’t give you ‘pie in the sky ideas’. She listens to what you’re saying and utilizes past information you’ve shared to make current day suggestions. I really like that!
She truly cares about how I’m doing
Desiree is very skilled as a therapist. She listens well, provides valuable tools to help your journey and is emphatic and kind. Just what I needed as I struggled with depression. Now I’m on the other side and feel weekly therapy sessions with Desiree got me there.
