Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Thomas! I am a native San Franciscan, born in the Mission District in 1948, and raised in the Bay Area. I earned my Bachelor's degree from Sonoma State University. I became a licensed psychotherapist (license #MFT 12297) in 1978 and have been in private practice since then. I am also a writer, and my column "The Examined Life" appeared regularly in San Francisco newspapers for over twenty years. My approach Hello, my name is Tom Moon. I believe that we find our happiness by knowing and fulfilling the plans, purposes, and dreams that make each of us unique?what in the Eastern spiritual traditions is called our dharma. My years of experience with Buddhist meditative practices have convinced me that psychotherapy and these spiritual practices have deep affinities. Both seek to expand insight and diminish suffering. Accordingly, in my work I combine traditional Western therapeutic techniques, especially Cognitive Therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as meditative mind training practices. My focus I work with patients who are struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, and loss. I also have a special focus on patients who are dealing with gay issues. My communication style In my experience, the most common complaint I hear about former therapists is, "S/he just listened and wouldn't say anything." My approach is more conversational. I don't hesitate to offer my own observations and opinions and to give advice when it is requested. My journey to mental healthcare I began to study psychology when I was still a teenager, and by the time I was twenty, I was clear that becoming a therapist was my sole career goal. I began working in the field in my early twenties as a counselor, researcher, and psychiatric technician. I was licensed in 1978 and have been in private practice since then. My goals for you In our first session, I usually ask a client, "If our work together is successful, how will your life be different than it is today?"
