Getting to know Virginia Barney

Hi there, I'm Virginia! Hello to all as you read this. I am Virginia M. Barney, a registered nurse who received her diploma in nursing from Marcy State Hospital School of Nursing. I earned my master’s in social work from Syracuse University and am now a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have a passion for my work and see it as a privilege to meet individuals where my skills may make a difference. I previously had a private practice for ten years and then returned to work in the public mental health sector. I recently retired from the public sector and decided to continue working with individuals and families in my own practice. I am a caring therapist who utilizes the strengths each person brings and intervenes with therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and other eclectic approaches as indicated by the person’s needs. My approach I most often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. I am certified in DBT and also use Structural Family Therapy. Eclectic approaches are often needed. My focus I have worked with individuals experiencing depression and anxiety, children diagnosed with ADHD/ODD, and those with relationship issues. My communication style I set a tone of acceptance, stating we are here to meet you where you are and accomplish what you wish to do. My journey to mental healthcare I was a Community Mental Health Nurse, and the social worker on my team encouraged me to go to graduate school. I have enjoyed the field ever since. My goals for you I assess what is going on, what you want to be different, and how you will know when it is different. I also look at barriers to change.
