This appointment was rescheduled to the following week, because their system did not have me on the schedule when I booked through ZocDoc the first time. I arrived on time for my appointment, but the wait was over 30 minutes and the office was running behind schedule. The staff was fantastic, though. Dr. Katz is very professional and cordial, and definitely an expert in his field. The staff was also very nice.

Bunions

A bunion is described as a bump that develops on the side of your big toe. Bunions are often referred to as “hallux valgus.” These visible bumps represent a change in the bone framework. Due to the affected bone structure, the big toe deviates from its original structure and leans toward the second toe. This pushes the joint outward, causing a bump. Wearing shoes that are too tight around the toes is the most commonly known trigger of bunions. However, factors such as certain foot types or having conditions like arthritis could be underlying causes, too.

After the bone structure has moved out of alignment, the bump becomes prominent. In many cases, the advancement of the bunion brings about painful symptoms such as soreness, pain, redness, hardened skin and corns. Bunions typically develop gradually and worsen over time, especially if you continue to wear narrow shoes. Studies show that bunions are comparatively more common in women. Bunion deformities can vary greatly in extent and their visible symptoms, so it is recommended that you consult your doctor for them.

Common questions and answers about bunions

When should I go to a doctor for bunions?

  • While there is a chance that the bunions might not require medical treatment, it is always best to consult your healthcare practitioner to get a comprehensive understanding of the severity of your condition.
  • In the event a bunion is interfering with your daily activities, book an appointment with a doctor’s office immediately.

What can you expect during a doctor’s visit for bunions?

  • Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and your family history.
  • A physical examination of your foot.
  • An X-ray might be conducted to diagnose your problem correctly.
  • Based on the severity of your condition, a treatment plan will be set for you.

Are there any nonsurgical treatments for bunions?

Yes, in many cases bunions can be treated without surgery. While nonsurgical treatments may not “fix” the bunions, they can help reduce pain and keep them from getting worse. The nonsurgical treatments include:

  • Changing footwear to more comfortable ones and ones that don’t compress the toes. (Feel free to ask your doctor for tips on this.)
  • Wearing orthotics. These shoe inserts can help take the pressure off bunions.
  • Padding can help cushion the bunion and reduce pain.
  • Icing can help reduce the swelling and painful symptoms.

Where can you find a nearby healthcare provider?

At Zocdoc.com!  You can book an appointment with top-rated doctors who treat bunions in your location. Booking is simple, secure and free! Experience healthcare at your fingertips, and make bookings online, instantly!

What are some quick tips for a visit for bunions?

  • Before your visit, write down any questions and concerns that you may have.
  • It is best-advised to make a note of your symptoms, as monitored over time.
  • Feel free to ask questions around your treatment options.
  • Check to see if the practitioner is covered by your insurance provider.

How much does a visit for bunions cost?

Consultation and treatment costs may vary depending on the severity of your condition. The prices might also vary based on your location, as well as your insurance provider.
