Garrison Whitaker, a Michigan native, is a graduate of the Liggett School. His Bachelor’s degree is from the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, he worked in several research labs, culminating in assisting the medical examiner. Dr. Whitaker attended Howard University College of Medicine, fulfilling his childhood dream. He completed a residency in General Surgery at the Graduate Hospital.
Developing an early interest in Hand Surgery, he was allowed a special 3 month elective at the Curtis Hand Center, in Baltimore, strengthening his interest. His Hand Surgery Fellowship was at the Kleinert Kurtz / University of Louisville, one of the oldest and largest Hand Surgery programs in the country, and where the first American hand transplant was performed. Dr. Whitaker’s training was highlighted by complex trauma, fractures, and regular digital replantations.
Along with his partners, he created techniques for the endoscopic revision of previous open carpal tunnel release. This allows many patients with recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome to benefit from a minimally-invasive approach. Dr. Whitaker has extensive interest in Dupuytren’s disease, on which he has lectured to other physicians and health care professionals.
Dr. Whitaker is active with his alumni chapter of his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, donating his time to various causes. In his free time, Dr. Whitaker’s outside interests are working out and independent cinema.
